Last weekend we made it to the Iowa State Fair again. It’s always a great fair with lots of things to do.
This year Colten was actually there volunteering in the 4-H building. He did several things while he was there but when we went through he was working with biochar, something I had never really heard of before. He explained what it was to people who came by the booth using visuals in his display area and helped children mix it with dirt to plan a flower to bring home.
It seems one of the biggest things we enjoy at the fair is the food. This year one of the big snack items was Bacon Wrapped Ribs On A Stick. It was actually a piece of loin wrapped with bacon on a stick for $3.00 each. It was okay, I’d definitely like to try it over a campfire sometime In the main food strip it seemed like we walked forever looking for a favorite food item, like pizza, or something totally unique. There were tons of sugary snacks and of course we had to have a funnel cake. One of the most common beverages throughout the fair is always the Lemon Shakeups. The ISF is never complete for our family though without having a Lemon Shakeup from the booth by the Swine building, several years ago my father-in-law actually won the biggest boar contest.
There is a new building that has tons of new baby animals, including baby chickens hatching from their eggs, it’s pretty neat. The newest baby pigs while we were there this year were 3 days old. They were pretty cute though.
Last week the kids started back to school. It is nice getting everybody back into a routine. This weekend we are prepping up to freeze some fresh corn off the cob. Our garden is overflowing with vegetables, I think it’s time for another fresh batch of salsa.
