As 4-H leaders one of the things my husband and I help do is put on the local fair. Over this past year we helped our 4-H club raise money to build a new Show Pavilion for our fair. With all of the rain we were getting this spring it felt like we would never get the building up. But after lots of hard work from many community members the building and concrete was completed just in the nick of time. The covered show ring was a great asset to our little fair.
Colten and Lizzie enjoy showing hogs at the fair, Colten even shows a few calves. This year Lizzie did a Pride of Iowa Project, a Working Exhibit, and Clothing Selection. Lizzie loves to search for activities on Pinterest, when she came across the Marshmallow Shooters by Come Together Kids she knew she wanted to make them as a Working Exhibit. She has done them at a regular 4-H meeting and included a game as part of the activity, at the local fair and even at the county fair everybody loves them. Lizzie loves to bake so for Pride of Iowa she wanted to bake cupcakes in a Baby Cake maker.
Lizzie and a few of her friends also took on a fundraising project at the fair. The diving board at the local swimming pool broke and the kids are really missing it, they are aware that it will take fundraising to replace the board so they came up with a game to play at the fair called Fish Frenzy. People would throw ping pong balls into little buckets and if the child made 3 balls they would get a gold fish. The girls used their own money to purchase all of the supplies and create posters for advertising. They raised over $200 on their fundraiser, which I thought was awesome!
There’s also some time for kids and adults to relax without watching the livestock shows we have a tent where people can play BINGO to win prizes. Lizzie loves BINGO!
Showing livestock is a large undertaking. You need to wash the cattle every day, groom them and before you can even do much of that you have to tame them and allow them to get used to you. The kids enjoy doing this and it is something Jim did when he was growing up that he really enjoys helping them with. There are always a large number of family and friends to visit with through the fair, this year we had a nephew become old enough to show I’m not sure what he really thought of the pigs yet but I think he really enjoyed spending time with Colten and Lizzie. Hopefully summer will start to slow down a little now though:)
